David Furnes,
designer/developer.

I like making things that make life better. I believe that thoughtful design can lead to products that are not just intuitive but delightful to use. I'm currently studying Computer Science & Psychology at the University of Connecticut.

I'm excited to be joining Do Something as a developer in June 2013, where I'll be helping activate over a million youth for social change. Here are some things I've made in the past:

DoSomething.org Dashboard

DoSomething.org Dashboard

While interning at DoSomething.org, I found that similar questions popped up all the time: What meeting rooms are free? When was code last deployed? Will I need an umbrella to pick up lunch? What is that song playing on the other side of the office?

With some inspiration, I set out to fix this. After proposing the project to my supervisor, I was given time to bring my vision to reality over the following weeks.

Dashboard provides an at-a-glance view of total members, live Twitter mentions, the weather outside, conference room availability (through Google Calendar), tech status (through Github and Redmine), and — this is pretty awesome — an office jukebox powered by Rdio.

Dashboard was built in Node.js, and uses Socket.io to push instant updates to connected clients without requiring a browser refresh.

Engineering Student
Leadership Council

As designer for the Engineering Student Leadership Council at UConn, I created a new logo & brand for the club and designed a matching responsive website.

While the club ran many popular events, few students knew what ESLC was. I worked to change this by tying the groups many events together with a common brand identity (used on posters, tickets, email, and the web).

I also made a MailChimp newsletter with a matching custom-designed theme to inform students of upcoming events and meetings.

One Planet Education

As design intern for the One Planet Education Network,
I wrote, designed, and coded a landing page for customers interested in purchasing their first educational game.

The signup form includes client-side verification of input, and automatically selects the customer's credit card type based on the typed number. It uses the Luhn Algorithm to quickly check the user's credit card number for typos.

Good Shepherd

I worked with the pastor and staff at Good Shepherd to create a website that was friendly and welcoming to new members, with an adaptive design that scales across computer, tablet, and phone displays (including Retina graphics for iPhone, iPad, & other high-PPI displays).

UCTV

I designed and coded a brand new website for UCTV, the student television station at UConn, allowing the group to make all of their videos easily available online.

I have also designed graphics (such as logos, banners, and animations) for over 30 UCTV shows.
